The 2022 São Paulo Grand Prix (officially the Formula 1 Heineken Grande Prêmio de São Paulo 2022) was the 21st race of the 2022 FIA Formula One World Championship, held at Autódromo José Carlos Pace on the weekend of November 11 to November 13 2022.
Background[]
All drivers and teams are set to take part in the race weekend.
The event is due to be held across the weekend of the 11–13 November. It will be the twenty-first round of the 2022 Formula One World Championship. It will be the third Grand Prix weekend of the 2022 season to utilize the Formula One sprint format.[1]
Safety concerns[]
In the aftermath of the Brazilian general election, the safety concern has been raised over the unrest in the country. Some Brazilians took to the streets of Brazil to protest the election results which prompted disruption of activities in the country.[2][3][4] There were reports that team logistic trucks belonging to Ferrari en route to the Autódromo José Carlos Pace from Viracopos International Airport was blocked by protesters.[5] The political instability in Brazil has raised question whether the FIA will decide to cancel the round or the race will go ahead as scheduled. Reports indicates that FIA and Formula One rights holder Liberty Media are reportedly monitoring the situation to decide the fate of the race.[6]
Championship standings before the race[]
Going into the weekend, both the Drivers' and Constructors' titles have already been decided at the Japanese and United States Grands Prix, respectively. Max Verstappen leads the Drivers' Championship with 136 points from teammate Sergio Pérez, second, and 141 from Charles Leclerc, third. Red Bull lead the Constructors' Championship from Ferrari by 209 points and Mercedes by 249 points.[7]
Sprint[]
It will be the third and final weekend of the season to hold the Sprint race weekend format. At an F1 Commission in mid-February, the teams and FOM agreed to some changes.
Sprint Qualifying was deemed a success in 2021, hence they will continue this year. As of writing this, there are three confirmed Sprint races to be held at Emilia Romagna Grand Prix, Austrian Grand Prix, and São Paulo Grand Prix.[8]
Sprint Format[]
The weekend format remains the same as last year, as follows:[9]
- Friday
- A one-hour free practice session with two sets of tires for teams to choose freely, and the Qualifying session with five soft tire sets available only.
- Saturday
- A one-hour practice session with one set of tires for teams to choose freely, and a 100 km (60 mi) sprint race (one-third of Grand Prix distance) with two sets of tires to choose freely, with pit stops not compulsory (see table above for new points scoring rules).
- Sunday
- Full-distance race with two remaining sets of tires.
Sprint Changes[]
At a F1 Commision in mid-February, the teams and FIA together decided to introduce some changes to the Sprint Qualifying from last year.[8] The changes are as follows:
- Pole position title
- Will be decided with the usual 3-round elimination Qualifying session on Friday before the Sprint. However, the grid for the main Grand Prix on Sunday will still be set by the results of the Sprint.
- Name
- Sprint Qualifying from 2021 was renamed to Sprint.
- Points
- See points table for new points-scoring system.
