The 2022 British Grand Prix (officially the Formula 1 Lenovo British Grand Prix 2022) was the 10th race of the 2022 FIA Formula One World Championship, held at Silverstone on the weekend of July 1 to July 3 2022.
Background[]
The race would be the 72nd edition of the British Grand Prix, with all teams and drivers taking part.
Racial issues[]
The days preceding the race weekend was not without controversy, as an interview featuring retired three-time champion Nelson Piquet from the previous year resurfaced, showing him using a racial slur when referring to Lewis Hamilton when discussed about the controversial clash from the previous year's race. The Formula 1 Management, Mercedes and even Ferrari and Aston Martin have since released statements condemning Piquet's remarks. Piquet later apologized, though he insisted that his remarks were misinterpreted.
Piquet's latest remarks came just after Red Bull had suspended their junior driver Jüri Vips after the Estonian was caught using a racial slur during a gaming livestream. Later the same day criticisms on Piquet were released, Vips was announced to have been dropped from the Red Bull Junior Team, though he remained as a driver in the Hitech team. Red Bull also declined to comment on Piquet's remark on Hamilton.

FP1[]
The weekend is due to have three practice sessions, each lasting one hour. The first session took place on 1 July and started at 13:00 local time (UTC+01:00). There was rain before and during the session, so some teams decided not to go on track as much as they normally would have. However, towards the end of the session the weather cleared and the track began to dry. A number of drivers attempted to drive the track on slick tyres, including Lance Stroll, who spun at turn 9 (copse) and got stuck in the gravel. The session was red flagged and not resumed. Valtteri Bottas was fastest, with Lewis Hamilton and Carlos Sainz Jr. in second and third respectively.
FP2[]
The second session took place on 1 July and started at 16:00 local time. The rain had cleared and the session was conducted in the dry. No major incidents meant the whole session was under green flag conditions. The Aston Martin of Sebastian Vettel picked up some floor damage in the session, but he made it back to the pits. Sainz was fastest, with Hamilton and Lando Norris in second and third respectively.
FP3[]
The third practice session started at 12:00 local time on 2 July. There were no major incidents and so the whole session was under green flag conditions. Max Verstappen was fastest, with Sergio Pérez and Charles Leclerc in second and third respectively.

Race[]
Report[]
The race started at 15:00 local time on 3 July. Verstappen took the lead at the start from Sainz, while Hamilton moved up to third. Gasly tried to pass between Zhou and Russell, after both had experienced poor starts and had been passed by Latifi. In an attempt to keep his position from Zhou, Russell moved to the left and made contact with Gasly, causing him to lose control and hit Zhou. The impact caused Zhou to roll over and skid across the track upside down, flying over the barriers, hitting the protection fence and coming to rest between the fence and the barriers. The Mercedes of Russell spun, but he managed to keep the engine running, and stopped to help marshalls with the incident. Subsequently when Russell returned to his car and attempted to restart it failed to fire up, causing his retirement, as he was returned to the pits by a recovery truck, meaning he had received outside assistance. Gasly was able to continue and make it back to the pits, the damage was fixed and he took the race restart. Bottas, slowed down slightly, due to the incident which led to Albon behind slowing, causing Vettel, to hit Albon, causing the Williams driver to hit the concrete pit wall on the right side of the track. Albon's car rebounded off the wall, hitting Ocon and Tsunoda, before coming to a halt. Ocon and Tsunoda were able to return to the pits and take the race restart, but Albon was forced to retire. Race control red-flagged the race due to both crashes. Zhou was extracted from his Alfa Romeo and stretchered to an ambulance where he was taken to the race medical centre. Albon was also taken to the race medical centre but was later transferred by helicopter to Coventry Hospital for observations. Both were later released.
The order for the race restart was set to the grid order, not on track positions, as not all the cars had passed the second safety car line before the race was red-flagged. The race restarted at 15:56 local time. Sainz retained the lead at the restart, before being passed by Verstappen. He later ran over debris, resulting in floor damage and a loss of pace. The two AlphaTauri cars collided on lap 14. This later contributed to Gasly's retirement. Halfway through the race, Valtteri Bottas retired and Esteban Ocon stopped on the side of the track. This resulted in a safety car period lasting until lap 42. During the final laps of the Grand Prix, Pérez and Hamilton both overtook Leclerc and finished second, third and fourth respectively, with Sainz winning. A fight in the midfield saw Haas driver Mick Schumacher claim his first ever points, in eighth.
At the first start of the race a group of seven individuals called Just Stop Oil entered the track and sat on the Wellington Straight, they were not shown on any broadcasts and the race was red-flagged due to the first corner incident before the race got to the Wellington Straight. All of the individuals were removed from the track and arrested.
