The 2022 Belgian Grand Prix (officially the Formula 1 Rolex Belgian Grand Prix 2022) was the 14th race of the 2022 FIA Formula One World Championship, held at Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps on the weekend of August 26 to August 28 2022.

Background

All drivers and teams took part in the race weekend, which came a year after the controversial events at the 2021 Belgian Grand Prix that led to the race being halted and half-points being awarded without a true racing lap.

Technical Directive TD039

The race weekend was the first weekend where the FIA will implement Technical Directive TD039[1], after complaints from drivers about the physical effect of the aerodynamic bouncing on them. This measure was introduced to control porpoising in the interest of safety.

Currently, there are at least two interpretations of how to meet the regulation defining the maximum flexibility of the plank. From Spa onwards, only one of these will be accepted.

Controversy

Red Bull and Ferrari suspected Mercedes was behind the push for TD039 since Mercedes is the team who suffers the most from porpoising issues and has the most to gain from the implementation of this techical directive. Red Bull and Ferrari saw their designs as innovative, but Mercedes alleged they are breaching the rules. Teams were unable to put a precise figure of performance loss from this change, but estimates claim a couple of tenths per lap.[2]

Circuit

Following a number of high-speed crashes at the notoriously-fast and dipping Eau Rouge-Radillon corner complex, including the 2019 Formula 2 crash that claimed the life of Anthoine Hubert, the complex's vicinity has since been revamped with more run-off areas.

Drivers

In the build-up to the Hungarian Grand Prix weekend, Sebastian Vettel had announced his retirement. Subsequently, Fernando Alonso was announced to be moving over to Aston Martin, with his vacant seat in Alpine announced to be taken over by reserve driver Oscar Piastri.

Piastri however denied signing a contract and stated that he wouldn't be driving next year, leading to a dispute which Alpine insisted that Piastri's seat is valid, amid talks of him driving in McLaren replacing fellow countryman Daniel Ricciardo as well.
