Day-by-Day[]

Day One[]

Report[]

Overall, the first day of testing was a success compared to the first day of testing when the regulations last got a major revamp in 2014. Lando Norris was fastest with a 1:19:568 set on a set of C4 soft tires, followed by Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz. A total of 1,121 total laps were completed amongst the teams. Max Verstappen completed the most laps to himself with 147 laps.

In the morning session, Robert Kubica and his team Alfa Romeo suffered some reliability issues[6] and weren't able to get out on track until right before the session ended; he was only able to complete a measly nine laps in the new C42 and only two fast laps. The morning session ended with Charles Leclerc on top of the timing screens with a 1:20.165, followed by Lando Norris and George Russell; all three were on the C3 medium tires.

Day Two[]

Report[]

Leclerc was the fastest overall in Day 2 ahead of Gasly and Ricciardo, who was the fastest in the morning session. The first red flag of the test came in the final hour when Perez stopped on-track with a gearbox issue. Another red flag was thrown in the afternoon session when Mazepin stopped from a fuel pump issue. A sensor issue meant that Hamilton ended the day slowest overall.

Day Three[]

Report[]

In the evening before the final day of testing at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, Haas announced that in response to the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict, which has since escalated into a war, they would be removing title sponsor Uralkali's branding on the car for the final day of the test.

With about an hour remaining in the morning session, Gasly crashed and damaged the front end of his AT03 that resulted in the second red flag of the session. Nearly right after the session was restarted following Gasly's crash, newcomer Guanyu Zhou posted his best second sector time before stopping in sector three, due to dipping into the gravel and crashing; this resulted in the third red flag of the morning session. Before this, Alonso stopped on track due to a "low pressure issue", which Alpine later confirmed was a hydraulics leak that caused a fire in the rear. As a result, Alpine had to stopped running after only 12 laps completed. With 15 minutes left, Zhou's car caused his second red flag (fourth of the session) due to a mechanical issue. This was immediately followed by yet another red flag for a record-breaking five red-flag interruptions, but this time was caused by Vettel's car catching on fire. The session was not resumed after the series of red flags. The morning session concluded with George Russell going fastest with a 1:19.233 on the C5 tires; the fastest time of the entire weekend. Russell was ahead of Max Verstappen and Sebastian Vettel, who were second and third fastest of the morning session, respectively.

After an interruption-ridden morning session, the afternoon session featured a wet track session; they were hoping for rain, but it did not arrive, so they had to artificially wet the track.[13] Williams decided to split both the morning and afternoon sessions between their drivers, so each drove for two hours then swapped seats. At the end of the day, Hamilton set the overall fastest time in the dying moments, just ahead of his new team-mate Russell, as well as driving the most laps of the day of any driver, with Perez in third. With their mechanical issues from the morning session, Alpine, Haas and Aston Martin withdrew from the afternoon session.
