Nikita Mazepin’s rookie Formula 1 season in 2021 with Haas was a challenging campaign from start to finish. Driving the underdeveloped VF‑21 alongside fellow debutant Mick Schumacher, Mazepin was hampered by a car that was consistently the slowest in the field, as Haas had frozen development to focus on the 2022 regulations.
He failed to score points across the 22‑race calendar, ending the year 21st in the Drivers’ Championship. Qualifying proved difficult, with an average grid slot near the back and Schumacher out‑qualifying him in the vast majority of sessions; his best starting position was 19th. His race pace was similarly limited, with a season‑best finish of 14th at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, largely due to high attrition. Mazepin’s year included several retirements — from early‑race incidents such as his Lap 1 crash in Bahrain, to mechanical failures in the Netherlands and Italy, and a high‑profile opening‑lap collision in Saudi Arabia. He was also forced to miss the Abu Dhabi finale after testing positive for COVID‑19. While he gradually reduced the number of spins and blue‑flag infringements that drew criticism early on, the combination of rookie inexperience and an uncompetitive car left him unable to challenge for points, with Haas finishing last in the Constructors’ standings.
