The 2021 Emilia Romagna Grand Prix (officially the Formula 1 Pirelli Gran Premio Del Made In Italy E Dell'emilia Romagna 2021) was the second race of the 2021 FIA Formula One World Championship, staged at the Autodromo Enzo e Dino Ferrari in Imola, Emilia-Romagna, Italy, between April 16 and April 18 2021.
Lewis Hamilton took his 99th career pole, with the Red Bulls qualifying one hundredths of a second behind him. Rain hit the track before the race, causing Fernando Alonso to slip off at Tosa and break his front wing, but was able to get it replaced, while Lance Stroll's brakes caught fire and were replaced. At the start, Max Verstappen had a good launch, edging Hamilton off Tamburello, the latter running over the sausage kerbs and damaging slightly his front wing endplate. The safety car was deployed after a collision between Nicholas Latifi and Nikita Mazepin, with Mick Schumacher spinning and breaking his front wing while weaving to warm his tires during the safety car period. Hamilton later made a rare error and slid at Tosa, breaking his front wing, but reversed and kept going right before George Russell collided into Valtteri Bottas, causing a red flag. The session was restarted, with Verstappen leading the remainder of the race to win. Hamilton meanwhile was able to recover to second ahead of Lando Norris in the closing laps, the latter passing the Ferrari of Charles Leclerc at the restart. Sergio Pérez slipped back to 12th from second, having given a 10-second stop/go penalty for overtaking under the safety car and spinning on the red flag restart, with Yuki Tsunoda 13th (later 12th) after crashing during qualifying, spinning and penalized post-race for track limits violations. A few more penalties were applied post-race, with Stroll dropping one place from 7th to 8th after gaining an advantage over Pierre Gasly, who was one of the four drivers to start on wet tires, and Kimi Räikkönen, who finished 9th, was penalized for a red flag restart infringement, dropping him down to 13th, losing Alfa Romeo's maiden points of the season and promoting Alonso into 10th, taking his first points since his comeback.
Background[]
The Emilia Romagna Grand Prix was intended to be a one-off race for the 2020 Formula One Season, but following the rescheduling of the 2021 calendar, which saw the Chinese Grand Prix postponed and the Australian Grand Prix moved to November, the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix was reinstated onto the calendar.
Lewis Hamilton won the season-opening Bahrain Grand Prix ahead of Max Verstappen despite having a slower car than Red Bull, with Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff admitting that the rule changes have allowed cars to be more competitive and to make the field more mixed up[1]. However, Mercedes trackside engineering director Andrew Shovlin believed that there is potential with the W12 to close down any deficit it has[2].
With much of the post-race debate also focused on track limits violations, as seen when Verstappen was told on the radio to relinquish the lead back to Hamilton in the previous race after running off-track while completing the overtake, the FIA is set to trial a "no-nonsense" rule for the Imola weekend, in which stewards will now be able to flat-out disqualify a driver if they run four wheels outside the white lines and onto the run-off areas.
Following the death of Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh on April 9, the race weekend was rescheduled to make way for the broadcast of his funeral. Friday's free practice sessions were moved 30 minutes earlier, while Saturday's free practice and qualifying were moved an hour earlier. A minute's silence will be observed before qualifying, and also on race day for Moto2 champion and MotoGP Aprilia Racing Team Gresini owner Fausto Gresini, who died on February 23 following a battle with COVID-19, with the MotoGP paddock doing the same at the Portuguese Grand Prix at Portimao on the same day[3].
