The 2020 Italian Grand Prix (officially the Formula 1 Gran Premio Heineken d'Italia 2020) was the 8th round of the 2020 Formula One season and the 90th Italian Grand Prix overall. It was held from September 4th to 6th.
In qualifying, Lewis Hamilton took his ninety-fourth pole position ahead of Valtteri Bottas and Carlos Sainz, Jr..
In the race, Hamilton soared out in front, but Bottas made a poor start and fell down to sixth behind Sainz, Lando Norris, Sergio Pérez and Daniel Ricciardo. The safety car was deployed on lap 20 when Kevin Magnussen stopped his car close to the pit entry with a technical issue, which also resulted in the race stewards not allowing the other drivers to pit while the pit entry was closed. Hamilton, however, did not notice any indication about this and came into the pits at the end of the lap along with Antonio Giovinazzi, getting back into the lead when the pit entry was reopened on lap 22 and most of the other drivers pitted. The safety car came in at the end of the next lap, but was almost immediately deployed again following a crash from Charles Leclerc at the Curva Parabolica at the end of lap 24, although the race was then red-flagged the following lap. In the process, Hamilton and Giovinazzi were given ten-second stop/go penalties for entering the pits while the pit entry was closed. The race was restarted with a standing start on lap 28, with Hamilton staying in the lead, though he would come in at the end of the lap to take his stop/go penalty, rejoining in last place and having to fight his way through the field to seventh place while Pierre Gasly took the lead. Sainz slowly gained on Gasly in the closing stages, but the Frenchman held on to take his maiden victory ahead of the Spaniard, whilst Stroll also took his second podium with third place.
Background[]
On Thursday before the weekend, it was announced that the Williams family will be stepping down from their duties in the Williams team after the race weekend. Their decision came only weeks after the team had been sold to private investment firm Dorilton Capital.
