Revision as of 15:54, 27 April 2020

The 2020 FIA Formula One World Championship, otherwise known as the 2020 Formula One Season, will be the 71st season of the FIA Formula One World Championship, held between 22 March and 29 November 2020.[2] The season would be the longest in F1 history, with twenty-two Grand Prix to be staged after the inclusion of the Dutch and Vietnamese Grand Prix.[3]

The start of the season was overshadowed by the coronavirus pandemic which originated from China, which resulted in the Chinese Grand Prix being postponed. As Italy was one of the worst affected countries from the outbreak, both Ferrari and AlphaTauri have expressed concerns from attending races. Organizers of the Bahrain Grand Prix have also banned spectators from attending the weekend. On 13 March, the FIA announced that the Australian Grand Prix would be cancelled following McLaren's withdrawal from the event after one of their members tested positive for the virus. Following the cancellation, both the Bahrain and Vietnam Grands Prix have been postponed as well. Later, the Dutch, Spanish and Azerbaijan Grands Prix were also announced to be postponed, while the Monaco Grand Prix was cancelled. On 7 April, the Canadian Grand Prix was postponed as well. On April 27, The French Grand Prix was announced to be canceled, with organizers of the British Grand Prix announcing the race as a closed-door event.

Vietnam is set to host a Grand Prix, set on a street circuit in Hanoi.[3] The Dutch Grand Prix is also set to return to the Circuit Zandvoort.[38][52]

Coronavirus pandemic

The 2020 Chinese Grand Prix is announced to be postponed on February 12, due to the outbreak of the coronavirus.[53]. As both teams based in Italy, which is one of the seriously-affected countries outside China, Ferrari and AlphaTauri expressed concerns on attending races, managing director Ross Brawn announced that Grands Prix may not go ahead should teams were unable to attend.

Organizers of the Bahrain Grand Prix have banned spectators from attending the race weekend. [54]

McLaren announced their withdrawal from the Australian Grand Prix on 12 March after one of their team members tested positive for the virus. The following day, the FIA announced that the Grand Prix would be cancelled after a meeting with the nine other teams concluded with a majority stating that the race should not go ahead. [55]

Following the cancellation, the FIA has also decided to postpone both the Bahrain and Vietnam Grands Prix. Later, on March 19, the Dutch, Spanish and Monaco Grands Prix are also announced to be postponed. On the same day, the Monaco Grand Prix was later cancelled, with no plans to host it at all in the year.[56] Although plans were made to start the season with the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, that race was later postponed on 23 March.[57] On 7 April, Canadian Grand Prix organisers announced that their race would also be postponed.[58] On 27 April, the French Grand Prix was announced to be cancelled, while organizers of the Silverstone Circuit announced that the British Grand Prix will take place behind closed doors.[59]

Testing

Testing for the 2020 FIA Formula One World Championship would begin with a tyre test at the end of the 2019 season, before two three day pre-season tests staged at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya in February 2020.[81] That, however, would be all the testing there would be for the 2020 Season, with no in-season tests scheduled in a bid to reduce running costs, as well as the fact that the rulebook was identical to how it had been in 2019.[81] It would also free up resources for teams to develop their 2021 cars, while every team would have to field a young driver in the post-season Pirelli tyre test.[81]

Outlined below is the full testing schedule for the 2020 FIA Formula One World Championship:

No. Test Circuit Date Report
1 United Arab Emirates 2019 Pirelli Tyre Test United Arab Emirates Yas Marina Circuit December 2019 Report
2 Spain 2020 Pre-Season Test 1 Spain Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya 19-21 February 2020 Report
3 Spain 2020 Pre-Season Test 2 Spain Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya 26 February-28 February 2020 Report

It was also announced that teams could no longer block off vision from the front of the garage during testing, meaning rival teams could see into each others garages and their 2020-spec cars during tests when they were being worked on.[81]
