The 2020 Emilia Romagna Grand Prix (officially the Formula 1 Emirates Gran Premio Dell'Emilia Romagna) was the thirteenth race of the 2020 FIA Formula One World Championship, staged at the Autodromo Enzo e Dino Ferrari in Imola, Emilia-Romagna, Italy, on 1 November 2020. It marked the first time Formula One returned to the circuit since the 2006 San Marino Grand Prix.
Valtteri Bottas took pole position during qualifying, which took place under a two-day weekend format, but during the race, Lewis Hamilton took the lead after staying out longer than his team-mate and pitting during the Virtual Safety Car period caused by Esteban Ocon retiring from a mechanical failure. Max Verstappen, who had been battling the Mercedeses suffered a puncture and retired, bringing out the safety car. Hamilton held to the lead after the restart and won the race, and with Bottas second, secured the 7th constructors' title for Mercedes. Ocon's team-mate Daniel Ricciardo completed the podium.
Background[]
The historic Autodromo Enzo e Dino Ferrari, inaugurated in 1953, first hosted an F1 race in 1980 as a replacement for Monza for the Italian Grand Prix. The circuit has since been featured on the calendar every season as the San Marino Grand Prix until 2006. The track's original layout had remained the same until 1994, when Ayrton Senna tragically died in that year's event, which also claimed the life of Roland Ratzenberger. The circuit has since been revised and modified, including chicanes added to the Tamburello and Villeneuve corners where the former and latter lost their lives at the respective sites.
Following the final San Marino Grand Prix in 2006, the track had undergone a major renovation in 2007. The track has since played host to several other events, including the Superbike World Championship, International GT Open, TCR International Series, 6 Hours of Imola and 12 Hours of Imola. The circuit was given a 1T grade by the FIA in 2008, allowing tests to be held on the site, before receiving a Grade 1 for F1 races to be held in August 2011. Talks for Imola to return to the Formula One calendar began in 2015, given that Monza would not continue running the Italian Grand Prix.
On July 24th, 2020, Imola was announced to be officially making its return to Formula One, named as the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix as part of the revised calendar due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Prior to the announcement, owners of Imola had submitted a bid to replace the postponed (later canceled) Chinese Grand Prix in February, due to the development of the pandemic. The Emiligna-Romagna Grand Prix weekend however will see an extraordinary two-day weekend, with one free practice session and qualifying on Saturday and the race on Sunday.
Red Bull Racing junior member and Formula 2 Carlin driver Yuki Tsunoda is set to make his weekend debut in the free practice session of the event in AlphaTauri. Despite Honda having announced their withdrawal from F1 after 2021, Red Bull has insisted that the departure will not affect the Japanese driver's future within the programme.
Before the race weekend there were three drivers announced to have remained in their respective teams for 2021: Pierre Gasly, Kimi Räikkönen and Antonio Giovinazzi. Gasly will be sporting a special helmet in tribute to Ayrton Senna.
