Changes from last season
Team changes
- Sauber formed a technical partnership with Italian car manufacturer Alfa Romeo for the 2018 season onwards, with Alfa badging across the car and their Ferrari engines.[43]
- Sauber had originally revealed a deal to use Honda engines for the 2018 season, breaking their decade long relationship with Ferrari.[62][63]
- However, their Honda plan was publically dropped on the 27 July 2017, quickly followed by the announcement of a multi-year deal with Ferrari to use their 2018-spec engines.[64][65]
- McLaren signed a three-year engine supply deal with Renault, ending their long-term contract with Honda prematurely.[19]
- Honda's sole customer for 2018 was revealed to be the Red Bull junior team Toro Rosso, with the potential for a deal with the senior Red Bull effort from 2019.[47]
- Red Bull would have British car manufacturer Aston Martin as their title sponsor.[32]
Driver changes
- After doing an extra season with Williams in 2017, Felipe Massa retired from the sport.[66] Sergey Sirotkin took his place,[54] while Robert Kubica served as the team's development and reserve driver.[51][67]
- After Carlos Sainz, Jr. moved to Renault at the 2017 United States Grand Prix and Daniil Kvyat being dropped after the same race, Toro Rosso fielded Brendon Hartley and Pierre Gasly for 2018.[45] Kvyat later became a development driver for Ferrari.[3]
- FIA Formula 2 Championship Champion, and Ferrari academy ace, Charles Leclerc was signed up to the Sauber team for 2018.[42]
- Marcus Ericsson was retained by the team, leaving Pascal Wehrlein without a seat, while Antonio Giovinazzi was registered as Sauber's reserve.[42] While Wehrlein returned to DTM,[68] he was also given the role of both test and reserve driver for Mercedes alongside George Russell.[24][69]
Mid-season Changes
Team changes
- During the Hungarian Grand Prix, Force India were put in administration,[70] before they were purchased by investors led by Lawrence Stroll.[71] However, Sahara Force India was excluded from the championship, resulting in the team reentering the championship as "Racing Point Force India" starting from the Belgian Grand Prix.[72] Due to their car being named with "Force India", they were required to keep their constructor name.[73]
Driver changes
Season calendar
- FIA announces World Motor Sport Council decisions, June 2017
- 2018 Formula 1 calendar revised as Chinese and Bahrain GPs swap, September 2017
- China extends Formula 1 deal to 2020, September 2017
- Singapore GP handed new four-year deal, September 2017
- FIA announces World Motor Sport Council decisions, December 2017
Changes from last season
Races on 2018 calendar
- The French Grand Prix returned after a ten-year hiatus, but was held at the Circuit Paul Ricard, the same circuit that hosted the Grand Prix on alternate years in the 1970s and 1980s before again hosting it in all years from 1985 to 1990.[74]
- The German Grand Prix is scheduled to return after being excluded on the 2017 calendar.[75]
Races removed from calendar
- The Malaysian Grand Prix will be removed, due to declining attendance.[76]
Schedule Changes
- The Bahrain and Chinese Grands Prix were moved, so Bahrain will now be one week before China.[77]
- The Azerbaijan Grand Prix will be moved from June to April, while the Russian Grand Prix will be moved from April to September.[78]
Regulation changes
Technical Regulations
- The new 2018 cars should feature the halo as a mandatory safety device homologated by the FIA. The halo is a head-protection device attached to the car in three points. Two of them are behind the head-rests, and one is in front and in the middle of the drivers' FoV (field of view). The halo is a titanium bar weighing 10 kg. It is capable of resisting extreme forces that can severely injure a driver in the head.
- "Shark fins" and "T-wings" were disallowed.[79]
Sporting Regulations
- The pre-season tests consisted of seven days overall, and the mid-season test was held at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, after being held at the Bahrain International Circuit the previous year.[80][81]
- If a driver receives a grid penalty for exceeding the allowance of power unit components and it is worth more than fifteen places, they will automatically start from the back of the grid.[82] If more than one driver has the same penalty, their position will depend on who changed their components first.[82]
- Most European Grands Prix will have their sessions held an hour later, while every race will also start an extra ten minutes later, in order to gain larger television audiences and enable broadcasters into spending more time interviewing drivers and teams during the pre-race build-up.[83]
