Changes from last season

Team changes

  • Sauber formed a technical partnership with Italian car manufacturer Alfa Romeo for the 2018 season onwards, with Alfa badging across the car and their Ferrari engines.[43]
    • Sauber had originally revealed a deal to use Honda engines for the 2018 season, breaking their decade long relationship with Ferrari.[62][63]
    • However, their Honda plan was publically dropped on the 27 July 2017, quickly followed by the announcement of a multi-year deal with Ferrari to use their 2018-spec engines.[64][65]
  • McLaren signed a three-year engine supply deal with Renault, ending their long-term contract with Honda prematurely.[19]
  • Honda's sole customer for 2018 was revealed to be the Red Bull junior team Toro Rosso, with the potential for a deal with the senior Red Bull effort from 2019.[47]
  • Red Bull would have British car manufacturer Aston Martin as their title sponsor.[32]

Driver changes

Mid-season Changes

Team changes

  • During the Hungarian Grand Prix, Force India were put in administration,[70] before they were purchased by investors led by Lawrence Stroll.[71] However, Sahara Force India was excluded from the championship, resulting in the team reentering the championship as "Racing Point Force India" starting from the Belgian Grand Prix.[72] Due to their car being named with "Force India", they were required to keep their constructor name.[73]

Regulation changes

Technical Regulations

  • The new 2018 cars should feature the halo as a mandatory safety device homologated by the FIA. The halo is a head-protection device attached to the car in three points. Two of them are behind the head-rests, and one is in front and in the middle of the drivers' FoV (field of view). The halo is a titanium bar weighing 10 kg. It is capable of resisting extreme forces that can severely injure a driver in the head.
  • "Shark fins" and "T-wings" were disallowed.[79]

Sporting Regulations

  • The pre-season tests consisted of seven days overall, and the mid-season test was held at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, after being held at the Bahrain International Circuit the previous year.[80][81]
  • If a driver receives a grid penalty for exceeding the allowance of power unit components and it is worth more than fifteen places, they will automatically start from the back of the grid.[82] If more than one driver has the same penalty, their position will depend on who changed their components first.[82]
  • Most European Grands Prix will have their sessions held an hour later, while every race will also start an extra ten minutes later, in order to gain larger television audiences and enable broadcasters into spending more time interviewing drivers and teams during the pre-race build-up.[83]
