The 2017 Monaco Grand Prix (officially the Formula 1 Grand Prix de Monaco 2017)[1] was the sixth race of the 2017 Formula One season. It was held at the Circuit de Monaco on the weekend of May 25-28, 2017.

In qualifying, Kimi Räikkönen took pole position, the first time he set pole in Monaco since 2005, and the first time he set pole overall since the 2008 French Grand Prix. He was joined on the front row by Sebastian Vettel, marking Ferrari's second front row lockout of the season. Mercedes' Valtteri Bottas qualified third behind them and ahead of the Red Bulls of Max Verstappen and Daniel Ricciardo, while Lewis Hamilton failed to qualify inside the top ten when a crash from Stoffel Vandoorne stopped him from completing his final flying lap in Q2, forcing him to ultimately start thirteenth after other drivers' grid penalties.

Background[]

Heading into the Monaco Grand Prix, Sebastian Vettel lead the World Championship by 6 points over Lewis Hamilton. Mercedes lead the Constructors' Championship by 8 points over Ferrari.

Following his retirement at the end of the 2016 season, Jenson Button returned for McLaren-Honda,[2] replacing Fernando Alonso for one round, while the Spaniard competes in the 2017 Indianapolis 500.[3] Alonso is expected to return for the Canadian Grand Prix.

Before the race, the teams and drivers will have a one-minute silence in honour of the victims of the 2017 Manchester Arena bombing.[4]
