1 Räikkönen gets a terrible start and drops from thirteenth to seventeenth. At the first corner, he falls behind Fisichella, Alesi, Verstappen and Button.
At turn 3, Bernoldi challenges around the outside. Montoya and Irvine come together in the corner with Irvine spinning off. Räikkönen takes advantage of the confusion to drive around the outside of Alesi and Montoya into turn four.
Räikkönen and Montoya move past Button at turn 8.
Montoya challenges into turn nine, however Räikkönen aggressively chops across the inside line to defend the corner. Murray Walker comments, "a sensational bit of passing by Kimi Räikkönen!" 
He runs wide at turn 12 and drops behind Montoya, Button and Alesi.
After the first lap, Räikkönen is sixteenth, five tenths behind Alesi and 14.1 seconds behind M Schumacher's lead.
2 Räikkönen is 1 second behind Alesi and 18.474 seconds behind M Schumacher's lead.
3 Frentzen spins which promotes Räikkönen to fifteenth. Frentzen rejoins right behind Räikkönen.
Räikkönen is 4 tenths behind Alesi and 22.355 seconds behind M Schumacher's lead.
4 Major accident between Villeneuve and R Schumacher. The safety car comes out and Räikkönen moves up to thirteenth. 
15 After nearly 25 minutes, the safety car comes into the pits.
On the restart, Räikkönen is 6 tenths behind Alesi, 3 tenths ahead of Frentzen and 6.431s behind race leader, M Schumacher.
16 Räikkönen moves ahead of Alesi. Verstappen pits at the end of the lap, promoting Räikkönen two places into eleventh.
Räikkönen is 3 tenths behind Button, 1.8s ahead of Frentzen and 8.112s behind race leader, M Schumacher.
17 Räikkönen moves past Button into tenth postion.
Räikkönen is 5 tenths behind Fisichella, 8 tenths ahead of Button and 11.412s behind race leader, M Schumacher.
18 Räikkönen is 6 tenths behind Fisichella, 2.3 seconds ahead of Frentzen and 14.141s behind race leader, M Schumacher.
19 Murray Walker comments, "in the top ten as he forecast he would be, the amazing Kimi Räikkönen from Finland"
Räikkönen is 1.1 seconds behind Fisichella, 1.3 seconds ahead of Frentzen and 17.480s behind race leader, M Schumacher.
20 Räikkönen is 6 tenths behind Fisichella, 1.1 seconds ahead of Frentzen and 19.723s behind race leader, M Schumacher.
21 Räikkönen is 8 tenths behind Fisichella, 9 tenths ahead of Frentzen and 23.000s behind race leader, M Schumacher.
23 Räikkönen overtakes Fisichella at turn 3 for ninth position. Frentzen follows him past a couple of corners later.
26 Häkkinen crashes out, Räikkönen is promoted to eighth. He is now positioned behind Montoya and teammate Heidfeld.
32 Murray Walker notes "Heinz-Harald Frentzen is closing on Kimi Räikkönen at the rate of four tenths of a second a lap."
34 Räikkönen moves past Trulli who is struggling. 
36 Räikkönen pits and drops to ninth. He exits in between the two Jaguar's of Irvine and Burti.
41 Irvine pits, Räikkönen moves up to eighth.
42 Montoya retires, Räikkönen moves up to seventh.
46 Martin Brundle commends Räikkönen, noting "he is pulling 1:31's in seventh place and does not appear to be tiring mentally or physically."
Irvine is 26.7 seconds behind Räikkönen.
58 Räikkönen finishes the race seventh, behind Frentzen and ahead of Irvine. However he is promoted to sixth after a 25 second time-penalty for Panis.
