The Jochen Rindt Gedachtnis-Rennen was a non-championship race held on June 13, 1971 at the Hockenheimring. The race was dominated by Jacky Ickx in a Ferrari, well ahead of Ronnie Peterson in a March-Alfa Romeo, and John Surtees in one of his own cars.
Background[]
The owners of the Hockenheimring had bid for keeping the German Grand Prix, but the ADAC decided to return the race to the Nürburgring after safety upgrades had been completed. So the Hockenheim group opted for hosting a non-championship race. The cancellation of the Belgian Grand Prix left a large gap in the schedule, and holding the race on the same weekend as the 24 Hours of Le Mans was not seen as a major issue.
- Ferrari: Not participating in Le Mans as a factory allowed the Scuderia to field a full team here. Originally Mario Andretti was entered in a third car, but he had suffered burns in an incident at a USAC race, and stayed home to recuperate.
- Lotus: After the Monaco race, Emerson Fittipaldi was moderately injured in a road accident in France, and would be inactive for a while. The team entered Reine Wisell in his normal car, Tony Trimmer in Fittipaldi's car and Dave Walker in the 56B turbine. But the turbine suffered a fire inside the turbine during practice, so it was scratched and Walker was placed in Trimmer's car.
- Surtees: The team showed up with the usual cars for John Surtees and Rolf Stommelen.
- Tyrrell: Jackie Stewart was driving at the CanAm at Mosport Park, and François Cevert was busy at the Formula Two race at Vallelunga, so the team skipped this race.
