Milestones[]
- Fatal accident of Jochen Rindt in practice
- First victory for Clay Regazzoni
- Final race for Ignazio Giunti
- After Rindt's death, 5 drivers were now in the title fight. All 5 had to finish ahead of Rindt, as Rindt held the tiebreaker on wins(5). Jackie Stewart and Jack Brabham were level on 25 points, Denny Hulme was a further 2 points behind on 23, Clay Regazzoni was 2 points back on Hulme on 21, and Ickx was a further 2 points behind Regazzoni on 19. Stewart and Brabham had a slight edge, as both drivers meeded to win 2 out of the last 3 races, with a 4th place finish or better to win it all, Hulme needed to do the same as both Stewart and Brabham, but needed to win or finish 2nd to stand a chance, while Regazzoni and Ickx had to do one better and win all 3 races to stand a chance.
