The 42nd International 500-Mile Sweepstakes was held at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway on May 30, 1958. The event was race four of 11 in the 1958 Formula One Season, and was also the featured race of the USAC Championship Trail. The race is mostly remembered for a massive first-lap, 15-car pileup that resulted in the death of driver Pat O'Connor, a previous winner and favorite among much of the crowd.

The race was comfortably won by Jimmy Bryan, who led 139 of the 200 laps. Rookie George Amick came from 25th on the grid to finish second.

Background[]

Juan Manuel Fangio was entered, but withdrew as he was unable to sort the car and reach qualifying speeds.
