The 1957 Argentine Grand Prix was held on January 13, and was the opening race of the season. In the usual mid-summer heat, the race was a 1-2-3-4 sweep for Maserati, with local hero Juan Manuel Fangio leading home Jean Behra, Carlos Menditeguy and Harry Schell. Ferrari had heavily modified the old Lancia-Ferrari D50s and rebadged them as Ferrari 801s, but the modifications were a disaster and made the cars uncompetitive.
