The 1938 French Grand Prix was held at Reims-Gueux on July 3. The race only had nine starters, and was dominated by the Mercedes-Benz. With their enormous advantage, the three Mercedes cars were allowed to race each other, to keep the spectators entertained. Pole sitter Hermann Lang led early, but a four minute pit stop put him well behind his teammates. This left the battle to Rudolf Caracciola and Manfred von Brauchitsch, and when Caracciola's engine went off song, von Brauchitsch sailed to victory. Caracciola nursed his car into second, with Lang a lap down in third.
