The 1933 Italian Grand Prix was held on September 10 at Monza combined road course and banked oval. It was won by Alfa Romeo driver Luigi Fagioli by 40 seconds over Tazio Nuvolari in a Maserati. It was held in the morning, as a prelude to the popular Monza Grand Prix, an event of several heats that allowed cars of different classes to compete for a rich grand prize.

The afternoon Monza Grand Prix was run using the banked oval track only, and was marred by great tragedy. In two separate incidents, but both along the same area of the south banking, drivers Baconin Borzacchini, Giuseppe Campari and Stanisław Czaykowski were all killed, making this one of the darkest days in racing history.
